Phil is right, I grew up understanding that a pelmet is the panel or shelf like thing covering the top of a curtain. Hides the rails and hangers. Sometimes the pelmet can be a fabric covered frame, sometimes it is a wood panelled structure.
I couldn't think of a better word for the equivalent westy structures. The early westies just had the trough on the drivers side and a little plastic pelmet over the pass side rear window. The later westies have a structure on both sides with integral curtain rail.
Phew.
It does sound vaguely rude. What a pelmet!
