Windshield frame hole to interior. At least in Europe it turned out that a tiny spot usually ends up in a complete hole under the windshield seal rubber, including water ingress. Or maybe an aftermarket sunroof?

If I had to connect the smell to the rust hole, I´d say it´s an eletrical smell. Check wiper motor (above glovebox). Check driver´s side fuse box and behind fuse box.
