I have made the same comparison between S&T and Delorme and for me I
found the user interface on the Delorme so bad and totally non-intuitive
that I uninstalled it and never looked back, I've been using S&T for
10+ years now.</blockquote><br>
Hi Loren,<br><br>
I agree it's idiosyncratic and that I grumbled at it in the
beginning. I do believe it's come a long way as a program in ten
years (my most recent version is 2011 Plus, the Plus referring to a
separate DVD containing a nationwide address-and-phone database you can
load onto disk or use from the DVD more slowly. See below).
<br><br>
I forget how much the interface has changed - I expect you'd recognize it
pretty well and probably not be any more pleased with your first
look. I'm not sure why they decided to abandon Windows conventions
but my thought is they wanted to make it as easy as possible to use,
rather than as easy as possible to learn. I think they may have had
some success there.<br><br>
Right-clicking on a point gives a considerable range of things you can do
or find out, including adding a route start or stop point or adding or
inserting a stop or a waypoint (they call them vias). The choice is
adding sequentially after all existing stops/vias or inserting them into
the logical place on the existing route If it's a route or route
point already you can delete it or some other stuff.<br><br>
To zoom in with the mouse click-drag a box from the upper left
corner. To zoom out, click-drag diagonally up/left to draw a
staircase of zoom levels. Let go when it's enough and it will zoom
out to that level. For either one one step at a time, roll the
mouse wheel.<br><br>
It's got many keyboard commands which you can customize and save in sets,
and it's happy to show you a nice legible web page for that particular
set that you can print. I tend to leave a browser window open with
that showing in big print that I can flip to. Page Up/Down zoom in
and out. Arrow keys move the window in the indicated
direction over the map, e.g. Left Arrow shows you more that was hidden at
the left. CTRL-Up/Down expands and contracts the tabbed
data/status/route/draw/find/etc. window at the bottom. Ctrl-H
toggles nighttime colors. You can toggle the various auto-display
options like zoom/center/rotate. F3 toggles the microphone.
You can select the Route or the GPS tab in the bottom; it will display
the window if necessary. F12 sets focus to the map in case it's not (same
as by clicking on the map but without other cursor side effects like
centering on the click).<br><br>
The voice commands are powerful, things like Where am I?, Are we there
yet?, Center on next stop, autorotate map on/off, Autozoom map on/off,
Center on gPS, Stop center on GPS, GPS status, zoom in six dimes,
zoom level 15, Pan left/right/up/down (may let you say how many times,
not sure), Show directions, Show list, Back on track, Voice nav on/off
(that's it telling you what's coming up), Shush (stop what you're saying
but keep on telling me things), Repeat last command, What can I say?
(open voice command tap, unfortunately pretty small print), More commands
(page down the voice command list). Pretty much anything you might
want to do without stopping you can do by voice commands.<br><br>
Ok, that's at least a faint taste of the way the thing operates. I
do think the intent is to smooth the path for an accustomed user at the
expense of making the learning curve somewhat shallow (or steep, if you
prefer the rearranged version). You might consider taking another
look.<br><br>

Below:<br>
Business and residential listings, listed only. I don't know
how good or complete it is, but FWIW if you live let's say not unadjacent
to the 5/405 crossing, DeLorme thinks I can be there in about 52 hours
and your phone contains the first seven digits only. It (the
program, not the phone database) has this data on tap about the town (or
perhaps it's the zip code), which is among what comes up when I
right-click on your location and select Info.** There's also
business data by sector for Snohomish County*** and a coverage list with
frequencies and call signs for AM and FM radio..<br><br>
If you right-click a point on a street you can find all known numbers on
either that block or the entire street, and you can easily arrange to
have them displayed along the street. Residential have pointy tops,
businesses don't. You can select to find only business, only
resident, both when you're doing a search.<br><br>
