3.5 aftermarket speakers will fit inside stock housings if you bend mounting tabs slightly. I used Infinity speakers in one of my Westfalias and liked the sound.  4'' Kenwood speakers have very thin grilles, and should work fine - they sound OK in my current Westy. Component 4'' speakers like Polk would be better because you can put tweeter pods on the dash without cutting. 

I keep my 10''dual voice coil sub in a q-logic enclosure behind the rear seat facing the hatch. It's easy to move when camping. 10'' sounds fantastic. I have it crossed over very high at 220hz with some EQ adjustments for the best sound. It's great for dubstep,  Pink Floyd or Chopin.
