We have a tool box (Harbor Freight trailer tongue box) up front which partially covered the lower vent area for the radiator.

obstructing airflow to the radiator with any boxes/spare tires etc mounted on the front of a watercooled vanagon is a BAD IDEA. get a receiver trailer hitch and mount it on the back. or carry a rooftop box
