Have you actually opened the front of a VW bug? There is some room up there, perhaps enough to carry your lunchbox...remember those? I couldn't carry my basic vehicle tools up front, in one I had recently...they were in a small plastic fishing tackle was too big, unless I took out the spare and stuck it in that space...

The VW Beetle is still a good vehicle. I drove mine to a bike race in Park City Utah from near Portland, Or. 70mph across the Great Basin and back, no problemo..About the same gas mileage as my inline Vanagon, but not nearly so comfortable as a platform for participating in a sport requiring lots of gear and lots of rest and food...
