Indeed, the rubber bushing that provides a tight fit (at the underneath/top of the filler tube connection) for the air/overflow tube (into the nipple out of the filler tube)had been jammed into the tube, blocking air flow. Thus, the fuel pumping issue. Picked the rubber bushing out of the tube and fit it correctly (tight fit) and drove to the petrol station and a successful fill up (and no leakage from the (recently sealed) fuel level sender, either ).
