I just purchased a 2.1 longblock from Suburban Engine, formerly Boston Engine. It is being professionally installed as I write, so no quality evaluation to report yet, but I expect no trouble. I had a Boston Engine motor before and it is still going strong after 120k miles and Gary LeBlanc learned his craft from Boston Bob. Don't know if he does air cooled engines.

David gex and avp have had their issues,
I don't know where you are but what we do is build engines using as many new
parts as we can. the only thing we basically reuse is the case which is very
strong. The only way we do this is turn key. This assures us it is installed
correctly and broken in correctly. I personally drive the customers van for a
few days to make sure it is all good. you might check in your area for somebody
that does this like we do. later mark dearing salem import service salem va

David, glad you are still out there!
I would recommend AVP Worldwide as a source for a good rebuilt, crate AC
Vanagon engine without a bank breaking cost. GEX has a very bad reputation
among those that have either bought one of their engines or have had to
deal with the aftermath of someone buying their engines (I am in the second
category). You can check with MAM but they probably just resell GEX
engines and get a little commission. That is just my opinion.
