You're right...a "reasonable price", however, is no longer the norm for Vanagons, me thinks...We seem to now have cult or collector vehicles that are selling for inflated cost when compared to similar vehicles that aren't branded "Vanagon"

I think part of the reason that vanagons are selling at what might be considered inflated prices is US....right here on the vanagon list(s) We have people who buy and sell these, many who do this as a hobby or as a side job, some full time Vanagon Flippers, even. So one comes up on Craig's list somewhere with a reasonable price and it gets posted here, then one of our own list-frequenting collectors goes and gets it and fixes it and re-lists it at a much higher asking price....A "Vanagon Bubble" so to speak. I'm not complaining, my own personal van has probably quadrupled in resale value while I've driven it for ~ 70k very enjoyable miles...

Remove the Vanagon and VW logos and what you have is an very slow under-powered old ratty beat up van that probably smokes and rattles and gets relatively poor fuel mileage, has a bazillion miles on it and is at least 8 times what you'd pay for S.O.B. (Some Other Brand) that would give similar or better performance...

I know this from experience, having just researched and acquired what I call my "Poor Man's Syncro" general motor safari awd van for well under 1/10 of the going price for tin top syncros...Fully pristine leather interior, 6 captains chairs in perfect shape, two air conditions, power every darn thing and not hardly a scratch on it anywhere, everything works exactly as from the factory...1997 model year...Try finding a Syncro for under $2k in similar condition....Heck try finding a 2wd tin top vanagon like that at a similar price...

No, we got "Gucci" vans now, I am afraid.. .We been Gentrified...
