Continuity never lies and you don't have to deal with the optical distortion created by that little quartz envelope. Hurray for stereo scopes in general, though. I treasure mine and built an industrial-type stand for it using drill press parts. If you're only getting ten volts on an unloaded socket, chances are you've got a bad contact, the voltmeter puts only a tiny load so it would have to be pretty bad contact to drag it down like that.
