I paid $4500.00 (CAD) for a "drive it home" Westy last month and, since I am 5000kms away from the vehicle at the moment I opted to pay a (reputable) VW garage to give it a thorough going-over and fix/update a few things. This work, plus a new rubber, ran me an additional $1100.00.

I expect once I arrive, there will be a bit of additional work before we depart (rust converter on the two spots of seam rust) and some primer on the new metal where the previous owner had the footwells repaired. I may also put the kit into the existing coolant pipes - though the mechanic said they are not "bad" yet. Compression looks fine - the mechanic wrote the numbers in a block on the back of the bill ... if I assume up is front, then they should be: 130, 145, 140, 140. The clutch is beginning to weaken - "the odd shudder during an aggressive road test" according to the mechanic who seem quite confident it will take me another 10K before I need drop the tranny (or the engine) and change it.

So, for $5600.00 - $6000.00(CAD) we should have something that will get the 3.5-yr old and I home :)

Once home, it will get shunted into the garage next to the '66 Westy until I finish updating everything. Next spring I'll repaint it (Metallic Savannah Beige) and resell to offset the costs of acquiring the TD(i) Westy.
