I use one that looks like the Go Westie one but I got mine at a NAPA store for about ten bucks...(about 4 yrs ago, given, but still...) I have the same one in my F-250 Powerstroke, still going strong after 300, 000 miles and actual years of keeping a second battery charged... The one in my Vanagon is under the seat and makes a nice clunk when I activate it with a secondary switch....a lighted toggle switch just below my legs... So, it works off the x-relay, I think that is the one that is only powered when the motor is actually running...and I can switch it completely off, should I want all my alternator to go right to the starter battery... Whatever you do be sure to fuse the wire between the two batteries....
