How about the default location for the much discussed fuel pump cutoff switch?  Louvers in one direction = switch on, other direction = switch off.

That area would be about the best place on the entire Vanagon for instruments except for the fact that you couldn't see them from the driver seat. I think when I get back from my trip that I'm going to have Felder enterprises design group look into putting a net screen door in that space that can drop down
