I believe the lock ring must be removed before you can pry out the drive
flange seal out of the adjusting ring. I think the adjusting ring could be
moved while prying out the seal which is why I recommended marking the
adjusting ring and transmission housing (Bentley 35.3, figure 3). I've had
different experiences pulling off the drive flanges. I've had some slip
off by pulling by hand and others have required a puller and colorful
language.
My Vanagon's drive flanges came off easily. YMMV.
