Dennis is correct, the boot does not hold the fluid in. It's there to keep dust and dirt out, which will cause your rack's bushing and seal to fail prematurely. And like Dennis said, you should replace the boot before going on your trip.

Why would you have to monitor the fluid? The boots do nothing to keep fluid in. If the rack is leaking it needs to be repaired or replaced. Otherwise, the boots should be available through local sources for under $20 and should take less than an hour to install. Jus separate the tie rod from the steering knuckle and replace the boot. You should be able to work them over the tie rod end.

Hey all,

It never ends...after a full motor and trans rebuild a month ago, I find the passenger boot on the steering rack is torn but mostly intact. I zip tied it back onto the rack flange to keep it in place.

I'm getting married in a week followed by a two week, 1500 mile road trip. Don't have time or money to fix now. Can I just drive it, monitor fluid, and fix it this winter?
