Your idea is correct. I have had a similar problem while on a long trip
from Michigan to Banff. I laid a piece of wire over the edge of the filler
pipe to prevent a complete seal after I started to hear the whoosh when
opening the cap. Changed the canister when we got home.
I have also had this happen when moisture somehow got into the canister
and it was evident only when it was very cold. One case led to a badly
collapsed tank and running out of gas when we didn't expect it in
temperatures below zero F. The didgiwife was not pleased.
