I've not attacked the vanagon transmission, but if it's anything like the
70's buses
transmission, I had a friend show me how to get it out with a finishing
nail and some
pliers.   He tapped a hole in the old seal in the softer section of the
ribbing with the
sharp end of the nail and then bent the nail close to the head end to a
right angle (90 degree)
and forced it into the hole.   Using the pliers he grabbed the other end of
the nail and pulled
until it loosened the seal enough to pry out.
