Well, my basis for saying to close it (and I always do so) is the instructions in my owner's book say it should be closed.  In that book, the only reason given for opening it is to drain accumulated water from the refrigerator.  The burner is ventilated via the flue, which consists of a draft pipe and an exhaust pipe.  But what do I know?  My refrigerator is now on the fritz, won't light and if it does, won't stay lit.  I need to pull it, clean it, and check the flue for any leaks. Don't know where one would get a new flue if needed.  I also understand that the insulation is not ordinary fiberglass insulation, and I don't know where any more would come from.
