Subject: Why later vent wings only open 90 degrees.
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"

Someone mentioned that the later (86 on) Vanagon vent wings only opened up to 90 degrees when I queried on how to tighten up the vent wings. Today I found out why 90 degrees.

I did the "O" ring trick on the vent wing this morning. I had a bit of a problem getting the vent wing out from the door. After wiggling the wing a bit it popped out...and I heard a "thud" inside the door. When I put the wing back in place, it flopped around and it was obvious something was amiss.

I pulled the door panel off, reached down to the bottom of the door and pulled out a piece that the shaft on the vent wing goes through. It's about 1.25 inches long, and about 5/8" wide. The piece slides onto the shaft and has a screw to tighten the piece to the shaft. When you turn the vent window open, the piece moves with the shaft and hits the inside of the door preventing it from moving more than 90 degrees.

Fortunately for me, over time, the screw backed out so the wing had full movement. All I had to do is to push it back in place when I put the wing back in.
