There must be something different about your fuel filler neck, or gas pumps - are they the high flow ones that used to be used for gasoline trucks? I find too that how you hold the gas filling pistol makes a difference too, in both the Vanagon and our Toyota. The Toyota, especially, is finicky about the angle of the pistol being just 'so', or it will click off after less than four litres/one gallon has been delivered.
