Four or five gallons of unfilled space? Those Maine gas pumps run a lot faster than your Syncro wants to be fuelled, don't they?
Still, I wouldn't fill to the top of the filler neck - too many modern vehicles have their evaporative canisters below that, and if you get too much gasoline in the evaporative canister you have really bad smells.
We don't have vapor sealing handles up here in Ontario either - the only places I've seen those in my travels are in Atlanta and California.
