oddly, I've never had any problems with deposits on intake valves. I always get 'em to run just great. it's not hard to eyeball the intake valve area on a waterboxer......just remove intake manifold.

Perhaps an 'Italian Tune-up' is in order. for those that don't know that 70's era term.. it means continuous high load high rpm operation.. like going full bore up a long grade at 100 mph at WOT.

there's the old carb cleaner down the intake and hold 2,000 rpm for a few minutes too, in the repair bay or back yard, not on the road running.

Does the bogging down go away when the engine is warm? Then it's probably deposits on the intake valves. If the bogging down is independent of engine temperature, then look at cleaning the injectors to restore the fine spray pattern. > > VWs are famous for deposits on the intake valves; the only VW I've owned that didn't develop them was a diesel Golf. There are gasoline additives that will remove them - Techron is the one VW officially recomends, but others will do the job, over time. Stick with better gasolines to reduce the formation of deposits in the first place. > > James > Ottawa, ON > '91 Weekender > >> Date: Fri, 15 Aug 2014 08:01:19 -0400 >> From: rjdperry@GMAIL.COM >> Subject: Re: WTB: EVAP charcoal canister >> To: vanagon@GERRY.VANAGON.COM >> >> Agree, wouldn't mind knowing what to look for with the canister.
