I too have wondered about the tar blob; I recently saw something similar on another persons vanagon.

As a small aside, On my 1988 Westfalia, As per a tip from Mark Drillock, I found that removing the metal frame at top edge of the driver side battery box has certainly made battery removal easier. My 81 still has this frame. One has to find a new way to attach the lid though as the lid normally attaches to this frame with four screws.

This would depend mostly on screw length, but it seems to me that if the forward LH screw were too long, it *might* come into contact with the positive lead(s). This is a remote possibility though.

I put a layer or two of duck tape on the inside of the battery box lid.
