My 88 2.1 WBX is like that; no connection from canister to air cleaner. But your comments remind of how the bottom hose on canister could get clogged. I'm enjoying my trip too much to pull the wheel and have a closer look at the canister etc. ;) It's running ok.

The Jetta Motronic canister purge valve is a solenoid type switched open, closed by the ecu.
