Of course, the percentage of vanagons with their original engine ...with say 150K to 200+K miles on it is, rather low.

Traditionally VW Vans have needed a rebuilt, or good used engine, about every 7 years, on average. And plenty of top end jobs also.

oil temp ..not hard for it to get up over 250F on long hot hills ...kinda scary. Even VW offered an oil temp gauge on some Rabbits and Golfs, calibrated in C degrees, like on a consul. . With a red band marked on the gauge I think. Owners manual says to ease off or take a break it oil temp gets too high I think I saw once.
