Thanks Scott, Mark et all.

I pulled the reverse switch again this morning - there is only one washer (2mm) between it and the tranny case.

The plunger on the switch was working freely, but I cleaned the switch just the same.

If I reinsert the switch without the washer, the reverse lights work properly. Not wanting to screw have the switch directly against the tranny case, I went hunting for a thinner washer, but didn't have one in the correct size. So I took a small piece of kevlar a cut one. Put everything together and it is working fine.

I've still ordered a replacement switch, just to be ready.
