This wire on my vehicle looks about 16ga, quite small. It goes unshielded from the O2 sensor about 15", snaking up into the engine bay, where it enters the wiring harness and crosses another couple of feet into the ECU...

The original shielded wire, that may be shielded like that because it runs right inside the harness, in actual physical contact with lots of other wires and these may, being so close, impart a bit of interference with the signal....hence the lead (?) shielding around the O2 sensor signal wire.... Since the signal is such a small electrical amount, I was thinking the actual wire size might make a difference in what the ecu gets from the O2 sensor...

I was even thinking I might try to 'fish' another wire through the original shielding...but that probably won't work...so I was also thinking of just splicing in another wire with shielding...Dang fussy little things...but the O2 sensor is good for an extra 5-6 miles per gallon on my digifant inline motor, so it's doing a good job...
