Maybe I should play more before posting next time. Just for giggles, I went out and hard cocked the mirrors to either side to try to look in behind them .... and there it was, a release leaver on the outboard side of the mirror ... slid it counter-clockwise a little less than a cm and the glass came right out (with a little effort to overcome 26 years of gunk).
