Thanks Stuart and for the replies and pmails folks.

While in the US, I bought a tool like the one Stuart links to. List
wisdom had previously suggested this tool. It's a not high end brand,
may not have optimal jaws, but so far, it holds the clamp well. Wrong
or right, with the removed clamp still in the jaws, I lay the clamp
near the floor, put my foot over it, release the clamp. I always wear
proper work boots when wrenching.

Ironically, the most stubborn clamp to remove was at the pipe under
pulley. It was a worm gear type.
