My guess is that the timing would have to be pretty far off to make the engine stall like that. My other guess is that there's a related issue(s) causing this to happen.

tencenlife on thesamba.com Vanagon/EV forum posted a great "full advance" method for timing the engine. Of note one has to identify the correct mark on the crank pulley for this method.
