Porsche also built a six using WBX style cooling, etc. It was the 993, I
think...not being a 911 purist I didn't really pay much attention to the
model numbers of those early water cooled Porsches...only to know that they
had similar problem to the Vanagon and were soon redesigned to become the
996 model that is similar to current flat six P car motors..
It seems that those rabbit inline 1.8liter motors are satisfactory for
many who run them in their vanagons...I had one and it worked just fine
with adequate power...but I can see how it would be a poor match to a
Vangaon auto trans..
