the easiest way is ... counting counterclockwise ( yes, backwards from how the dist turns ) it's 1-2-3-4, starting from 1 of course. if it's been assembled right, there is a faint notch on the top edge of the dist body ( with dist cap removed ) to show where # 1 is suppossed to be on the dist.

you have to know how the cylinders are numbered too.
