I'm pretty sure that alternatives to the old newsgroups are taking their toll on the newsgroups, but I doubt that they will replace them.

It also may be that as time goes on there are fewer and fewer Vanagons on the road, thus there is going to be less need to talk about them.

I still think that her newsgroup like Vanagon List is the best arrangement to satisfy the needs of the home mechanic and trouble shooter. I don't see Facebook or Pinterest being very good at that.
