More than once, I've been fiddling around in the engine compartment of my 85 Vanagon, "improving" it, only to take it for that test drive around the block to enjoy my efforts and find out that it's now running worse than ever.

The problem has ALWAYS been that the vacuum hose (little one about 1/8" ID routing along the firewall) has slipped off of it's fitting (not slipped off, I inadvertently knocked it off while cleaning, etc.). No vacuum, no advance. Put it back on, and magically all is fixed.

Excuse the unknowing question and possible thread jack but how do you check the vacuum advance? I have an 84 with a terrible time taking off...I have to rev and get throttle up for it to go or it just sits there hesitating. wondering if this might be my issue as well?
