I installed my staple type canvas with pop top still attached to Vanagon. These pics may not be of use but may have some helpful hints. https://picasaweb.google.com/musomuso/1981WestfaliaCanvasReplacement#

I used the original canvas "marks" as a guide and measured the old canvas against new. The new canvas edge is installed close to the plastic strip edge, upper and lower edge has a "lip".

My canvas is a "tight fit" German tent from van-cafe. I may have mounted it too high at the wood strips; it's tight! But it's holding up ok. I tacked the tent to the side wood strips to get a rough idea of whether or not the canvas had enough length to attach properly under the lower strips.

If working in colder weather, *warming* up the plastic strips with a heat gun will help you get staples in. Warning: the strip heats up QUICK !
