Broken timing belt? I once had one of these Subaru engines in a (hold your breath) Subaru. The engine is a non-interference engine, so the belt breaking is not the disaster that it is with some vehicles. What you describe is exactly what I experienced when the timing belt broke. The vehicle was almost new, 12,000 miles, and that is why I have never had anything Subaru since. Not just the fact that it broke, but that after it broke repeated appeals over a several month period to get the knock that the stretched belt caused taken care of with the Subaru dealer just claiming that was "normal, they all do that, and it will never be a problem." Sure, a knocking engine is not a problem in a new car. So, when it broke and stranded me, I had to pay for towing, and for the belt replacement. It took 2.5 years before I eventually got a settlement from Subaru.
