It clearly goes over the flange, otherwise the guide pin is exposed when you shift to 2nd or 4th.

And I cured my balky shifting.

Hi all:

I'm re-installing the complete shift linkage mechanism on my air-cooled Westy and I'm not sure if the rear of the accordion boot that is attached to the third shifter shaft and covers the guide pin is supposed to cover the large round flange of the shift pin or "float" in front of it. I'm sure that when I took off the third shifter shaft the boot enveloped that flange. My hazy memory from years ago when I worked on my air-cooled Vanagon is the same. But I'm looking for confirmation here.

None of my manuals mentions this and I can't find a clear picture of the boot in situ so I'm turning to the list: Boot over flange or floating in front of it?
