I have no experience with Vanagon coils but I've owned a lot of cars and those coils I bothered testing did not get hot.

To expand on the alternative coils statement, I went to buy an ignition coil for a VW a while ago and AutoZone tried selling me what they called a universal coil. Apparently they have gone to one part number for most if not all of the applications that use the round style coil, This just about guarantees the coil is a misfit because your ignition coil is part of a tuned circuit.

Bruce,

Not the silver colour of the coil! The Water Boxer coil was black in colour, even the replacements. May have changed over the years.? The alternative part numbers for ignition coils are long and full of errors.

Coils DO run hot to the touch but, not skin burning hot... from my experience.

Check the part number on your silver coil, against what our list vendors are offering..

Happy hot coil running. Cook dinner on it while driving?
