The Vanagon gearing is higher than the older buses. Having done this
"shortcut" on many occasions on both bay window and my 90 GL, the
rolling action of the bay window was much smoother. I once ran it out
of gas at the base of a hill at 2AM in Chattannoogga back in the early
80's when 24 hr. gas staltions weren't so prevelant. I rolled the van
off the starter for almost 4 blocks up a 7% grade(or thereabouts) to get
to where I thought there was an open gas station. Crested the hill and
luckily there was an Exxon open and coasted right down the last 4 blocks
to the pump. As a result, my buddy sleeping in the back didn't have to
get out and push and we made it in time for the whitewater races at the
Nantahala late that morning. Prolly could have cooked breakfast on top
of the starter, but that starter lasted another 3 years after that
incident. Don't remember the brand of the battery either, but IIRC, I
replaced it eventually with one just like it. Another reason this
doesn't work as well with the Vanagon is the 10' long cable from the
battery to the starter. The bay window cable might've been what....3'
at the most? The bay window was a tad lighter too. YMMV
