> > Since you're not running a catalyst you could figure a way to tune things > so the O2 sensor is not needed. > I have been told that the Digifant engine management system, being older and simpler and more basic than the newer EMS's that have come along, the Digifant uses the input from the O2 sensor to a greater degree than the newer fuel injection set ups.... I've seen around 4 miles per gallon better gas mileage since I squared-away my o2 sensor's operation with my inline engine system. A $20 part that gives 4+/- mpg and lasts around 60k miles before it needs replacing? That is a pretty effective part, as it's working now in my van...I guess I won't be messing with it again unless it breaks again..."if it ain't broke, don't fix it?" I've said it before...I am SO glad this vangaon does not have the OBD system. I have that other van, my $2000 AWD Safari work truck now, and almost everything I read on the Astro/Safari forums is about how to 'work around' various 'check engine' warnings and glitches. The vanagon? It's a lot simpler. Running the small Jetta inline motor with no cat convertor is legal and I seem to get pretty effective combustion and propulsion from relatively little environmental impact..When I follow a line of rather large Dodge Ford and Chevy pickup trucks down the interstate I feel like I'm not the one who's stinking up the air...When I see a few 100+ car coal trains each day, heading for China and the East, when I see trainloads of Tar Oil headed the same way...I don't feel bad about the slight whiff of pollution my rather small motor might be adding, just because I have no cat converter on it. when I see Mom and Pop in their 40' 20-ton motor home, pulling a 26' trailer full of motor toys, heading out for a couple of days of 'camping'....I think to myself...."hey, I could run for a couple of weeks on just what they'll use in the next few hours" |
