All the Waterboxers originally had the same gear ratios. Somewhere in late 88 or 89 they slightly changed the 3-4 slider hub. I've seen them break too.

I have a chance to gat an '88 gear box for my '85

could anyone tell me is there any difference between a vanagon '85 gear box and '88 gear box... in term of gearing and longevity...
