The sensor buried in the evaporator coil is the *freeze* sensor, not the T-stat sensor (at least in my '86). This sensor is to detect coil freeze-up (like that happens in these beasts) and shut off compressor before it's damaged. The T-stat is (in my case) part of the temp control switch.

I got a replacement which works fine ... now I get stuck with the sensor buried deep somewhere in the evaporator... the cut and splice idea is perfect... I agree for not to create another problem after open it... thanks again dan
