It significantly reduces the current flow though the ignition switch to the
solenoid.  It's a good idea given how flimsy the Vanagon ignition switch is.

I have Tdi starter in my 2.2 Syncro. Just make sure your engine is well
tuned , that things spins like NOW . No cranking needed .
     I have also installed a relay kit from Jay Brown , I am unsure of what
really does it but it does it very well.
