I have a heater for my '81 Vanagon. It was available at the dealer in those days. Similar to what was made for the beetles, it is a sheet metal "pan" with a couple of tabs that holds a heating element similar to an electric hot plate element. The tabs go on bolts on the engine to hold it to the bottom of the sump.

Mine still works. Since the heat has to transfer from the element to the air to the bottom of the case to the oil, it falls into the category of "better than nothing."
