Yeah, don't give up so easily. This sort of thing happens more than you think. Usually it happens through local channels, but the broad network that is this list can be a powerful tool. LIMBO, Full Moon Bus Club members do this.
I've joined the recently formed Slate Valley VW Club in SW Vermont (find us on Facebook). They've already had several group repair/maintenance days. We had Colin of itinerant-air-cooled.com come for two days over Labor Day weekend. Very productive, lots of fun and exhausting. I'm in Rutland, VT and have recently finished rebuilding a large garage. It doesn't have heat yet (I'm working on it) but I'd offer it for a meeting place. I would be more of an assistant/student rather than a mechanic/teacher.
