Just for reference there are a LOT of modern engines using forced induction to improve economy and performance. It must be an American (oil company) thing to restrict effective economical fuel consumption imports to the US.....I'll be surprised if it is allowed to transplant a diesel like that into a Vanagon for long, here in the US.

Our Vanagons are actually sort of pathetic when it comes to fuel economy. Page around on the Fuelly site and see what kind of mileage some of the Super or Turbo vehicles are getting. It shows most Vanagons run in the 15-20 mpg range...Double that and you are in "modern vehicle" gas mileage... Yes, we still go further on a gallon of gas than most US Domestic camper vans or cargo vans...but not much further
