The articles I've seen are pretty brief, so I don't fully know what this set up looks like. But wouldn't an electric turbocharger technically be a supercharger?

My 2010 Golf TDI with the 2.0L (engine code CJAA) already gets 40-50mpg. I can easily get over 50mpg at highway cruising speeds. Although it "only" has 140hp @4,000rpm and 236ft-lbs between 1,750-2,000rpm, coupled with the 6-speed manual, it's a spirited performer. It blows the doors off the 87 GTI I used to own. 

I guess this engine is good news for the SUV market, but I hope their efforts spill over into increasing mpg even further for "normal" vehicles. Also efforts to increase reliability issues and lowering the initial premium purchase price would be better appreciated by me.
