I think the problem with the vanagon is it sits high, higher than the Rabbi, so the light pattern is smaller - for the same distance let's say 20 feet. So we need to aim higher in order to get a larger light pattern which in turn make us see less because the light pattern is farther away...

just a thought... it could be wrong.. :-)
