I had an '85 and actually tried Syncro rear springs. They didn't compress enough and topped out the shorter travel suspension. The result was a stiff ride with no negative suspension travel. I can see how they would be useful with, say, an iron-block 5-cylinder or a V6 hanging out back.

To raise the back to almost even with the front I cut some spacers from high density polypropylene board and used stock springs with 3 spacers on each side. Google "Vanagon sag" for my "7 steps to a happier back end".
