When we purchased our 91 westy at the end of 1995, the best VW mechanic in
our area worked at the VW dealer about 25 miles away and he performed any
needed maintenance on the van for years and did exceptional work.  One day,
when I showed up for some work, I was informed that mechanic had retired
because he had badly injured his hand.  But, I was assured the new guy
assigned to Vanagons knew them well.  About 30 minutes later when that
mechanic came to the waiting room and asked me where the brake fluid
reservoir was located, I cancelled the work order and decided I needed to
find another mechanic and learn how to do much of my own work.
